What is popular in social media?

I performed a basic experiment on the popularity of social media websites by creating two different accounts on tumblr. I long wondered why my website and this blog still wasn’t getting visits, likes, shares like other sites. I did all the same things, covered a variety of interesting, relevant, current topics, like book reviews, technology, social commentary, health and book lists, along with writing a variety of books.

So, I joined tumblr with a “G” rated account, sharing from this website and blog  health, nutrition, exercise, books, posts/day-to-day items. In a few months, garnered 20 followers, which was par with my website and other social media accounts I shared my daily posts, such as Facebook, Google Plus, LinkedIn, Path, Digg, StumbleUpon, Digg, Reddit (who keeps blocking me by my posting these G-rated articles/posts), to name a few.

The other tumblr account was “X” rated, where I re-posted tasteful but very adult-oriented pictures from other x-rated tumblr accounts. In the same time period as the “G” rated account, I acquired 278 followers. They interact, like, share and comment so much more than the other account. I guess I was naive, but I didn’t expect this second account to be so much more popular. That is without sharing to all the previous social networks.

This unscientific experiment shows people want sex and instant gratification over well-thought out  healthy and intelligently written articles and posts. Even my post about following simple directions to like the post on this website didn’t get a single like until I asked someone directly.  I can see through the wordpress stats page that people are looking at the particular post but not liking OR commenting. Liking isn’t that difficult-I asked a wordpress employee to test it out to see if people were getting blocked and guess what?  No issues with wordpress OR this blog at all.

People are just lazy and want to be teased and titillated. I don’t have hundreds and thousands of dollars, I don’t have teams of tech gurus, SEO experts (not needed now, I suppose with Google changing), professional photographers, professional editors/proofreaders. This website is just me, myself and I. I created the content you see on all the pages. I’m the one that wrote ten books and trying to advertise, publicize on social media and free places-all by myself on a limited income. I’m the one that had been writing daily topics and sharing across the internet, by myself. This takes time, energy and money I don’t have.

All for what? To be largely ignored. I sure have no idea what I’m doing wrong. I’ve read tech-help articles, social media “experts” testimony, advertising and publicity know-how’s and according to all of them, I’m doing all the right things for this website and blog–but still not getting views, comments, likes and shares across the internet. I”m just spinning my wheels and if it’s one thing I really hate doing, is spinning my wheels and not accomplishing anything.

What am I going to do? Well, one thing I’m not doing is continuing busting my hump over posting daily articles/posts anymore. I’m not getting paid for them and they aren’t getting action. The only reason I kept writing the articles and posts for the past 10 years was to draw attention to my books. Yes, the 10 I’ve written over the past 10 years.

I have more books to write so I am stopping the articles and posts (unless someone wants to pay me for them) to concentrate on future books. I may post  an article or blog post here and there, but, for the most part, I am done. Feel free to read the past 5 or 6 years posts on this blog’s archives.
